Wonderful Pat Gohn of Among Women tagged me with a Lenten meme.
The rules: Those tagged will share 5 things they love about Jesus/why they love Jesus. Those tagged will tag 5 other bloggers and will provide a link in the comments section here with their name so that others can read them.
My Five:
1.
He loved me when I didn't even know He existed; He loved me when I knew He existed but I ridiculed Him; He loved me when I broke down, sobbed, asked Him to forgive me my countless sins and transgressions. He loves me now as I stumble through my life as a Christian. I love Him because He first loved me.
2.
a.) He sacrificed His Body and His Precious Blood in order to save me. And He repeatedly offers me His Body and Blood, and saves me again and again, every time I assist at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
b.) Sacraments. They are like Divine Magic, minus the sleight of hand, plus the ooohs and aaahs. They stagger me. They are weird and brilliant.
3.
He makes all things new.
4.
He laughed. He wept. He got frustrated. He celebrated. He grieved. He knows all things. He knows why I laugh, why I weep, why I get frustrated, why I celebrate, why I grieve.
5.
Confession! It's the best. Even when it feels like the worst. The worst becomes the best. (I told you He makes all things new.)
6.
Did I mention that He first loved me?
7.
He forgives me for cheating at/ignoring the rules about memes and about how many things one should list.
Okay, the tagging business. I'm terrible at this. I promise I will try to actually, literally tag some people, but in the meantime, if you want to do the meme, please do, and let me know. Or, just leave your five in the comments.

My friend's observation that if I were to throw up on the Archbishop (Confirmation is approaching + we've been sick here = I don't want to do the math if Atticus has stomach flu) I could write a different kind of book.

Your Favorite Catholic Devotions and Prayer Practices?
Mary de Turris Poust tagged me for a meme. The original question was,"What are your five favorite Catholic devotions?"
But Mary responded, "To be honest, my devotions are not going to look or sound like traditional devotions. That's why I added 'prayer practices' to the headline."
Sounds good to me. I never seem to fit neatly into categories either, so I'll follow Mary's expansive lead. And some of my answers arestolen from similar to Mary's.
1. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy
I love this prayer. Years ago, before I was a Catholic, I was struggling with an enormous problem and my marriage was on shaky ground. I had stopped attending the Episcopal church, and had no place to call my spiritual home. My friend Jack gave me a copy of the chaplet saying, "Here. Pray it every day for the next month." I shrugged and supposed it couldn't hurt. I prayed daily and at the end of that month, it seemed that my problem had miraculously been dealt with and my marriage was getting a new start.
Ummm ... okay.
I knew the prayer wasn't a magic charm but it did seem to be a Catholic road sign. A big, neon one. A sign among many that had been piling up. Nine months later I was Catholic.
2. The Rosary
A no-brainer since I wrote the book on it ....
But, seriously, I do love it. I love that the Rosary meets me where I am. If I'm in a hurry, Mother Mary takes my hastily tossed up prayers and delivers them quickly to her Son, as if she were the head of a holy bucket brigade. If I have the luxury of time and contemplation, I am rewarded with sublime immersion into the life of Jesus. He visits me through the Rosary, holds me, accuses me, redeems me. And He does it all through the mysteries that are His life and the life of the woman He honored enough to ask Her to be His mother.
3. The Liturgy of the Hours
As Mary noted this isn't technically a devotion but since I do have a great devotion to the Liturgy of the Hours, I have to include it. I wrote more about it here (in the second part of that post.) And, thanks to pal Lissa, I now have iBreviary on my iPod Touch. As much as I love my set of prayer books, I must admit that iBreviary has saved Atticus and I many ribbonless minutes on busy workday mornings.
4. Music
Mary also mentioned music and said that "it's a rather odd choice even as a prayer practice, but it's true." I don't think it's odd at all! I can't imagine not including music as part of my prayer life and devotions. If I am feeling that something's missing, if I am drifting from God, if my prayer life needs a booster shot, I can almost guarantee that certain songs or kinds of music will transport me to the place I need to be: gratitude, yearning, love, attachment, detachment, awe, charity, mystery, hope. It can range from Bach to Matt Maher, from chant to Jill Phillips.
And by the way, dancing in the kitchen is a holy experience, too.
5. Embracing My Vocation
This should possibly be #1 on my list. It is so very Catholic to think of life in terms of vocation. We are all called to something. In my case, I was called down a circuitous path to marriage and motherhood. When I embrace that vocation as a holy calling, when I have a devotion to my duties, seeing each duty as a prayer, when I offer up every suffering large and small, when I pray through every challenge and triumph, when I talk to God about everything from the laundry to an illness in the family, from dishes to writing deadlines, I am practicing a truly Catholic devotion.
Now it's your turn.
Instead of tagging others, I'm asking you to send me a link if you blog this meme. Then, I'll put the respondents together in a post.

A Book Meme!

Got this one from Jennifer, Faith and Alicia:
1. What author do you own the most books by? C.S. Lewis, William Faulkner, Shakespeare, and Dr. Seuss. (Now there's a group I'd like to put together in a room -- what would they create? A sing-songy, nonsensical, incomprehensible, lyrical, heart-probing and classical defense of Christianity....)
2. What book do you own the most copies of? I think it's the Bible. Or Shakespeare. Or a Harry Potter book (I blame the children for that one.)
3. Did it bother you that both those questions ended with prepositions? It is something of which I had not thought.
4. What fictional character are you secretly in love with? It's no secret that I adore Atticus Finch and hope to spend the rest of my life with him.
5. What book have you read the most times in your life? Actually, it's probably a little paperback called My Name is Elmo.
6. Favorite book as a ten year old? Nothing startlingly classic -- I didn't even read some of the most wonderful stuff until I was an adult, such as Anne of Green Gables. No, my favorite was something from the Daytona Beach, Florida library. We lived by the ocean for a year when I was ten, while my father was stationed in Korea, and I read and reread a book about a woman who had twenty or thirty cats, one of them named Felicity. I vowed I would one day name a child (or a cat) of mine Felicity.
7. What is the worst book you’ve read in the past year? The worst half of a book I read was Twilight. I do not care for the "alluring bad boy" theme with which it drips.
8. What is the best book you’ve read in the past year? Ginger Pye with the kids. For me: Malcolm Gladwell's Blink and his Outliers, and Charles Shields' Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee. And my reread of To Kill a Mockingbird. So fun to share it with Anne.
9. If you could force everyone you know to read one book, what would it be? To Kill a Mockingbird. But they can't have Atticus. He's mine.
10. What book would you most like to see made into a movie? They already did it. To Kill a Mockingbird is probably the closest thing I've seen to a beautiful translation to screen.
11. What is the most difficult book you’ve ever read? I'm sure it was something by William Faulkner, and I blame him. And alcohol. His, not mine.
12. What is your favorite book? I can never choose just one! Don't torture me with sadistic mind games! (And that is a stolen quote from, not a book, but an episode of a Bob Newhart show.)
Doesn't "my favorite book" depend on one's mood? One's season in life? The season of the year? I love different books in different moments. Don't you? Who created this meme, anyway? Is this a psychological test?
Now, I'm not saying that love depends on a mood (don't get me started) but to choose a favorite book is akin to choosing a favorite child. And, I'm not saying that I have different favorite children on different days, depending on my mood. Anne, Betsy, Ramona, you know that, correct? I would hate to have a little blog meme inflict some deep and lasting psychological damage on my children. But, I digress.
Loads of favorite books that everyone should read at some time or another:
To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, Fr. Elijah, The Fire Within, Mere Christianity, The Secret Garden, Anne of Green Gables, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Abandonment to Divine Providence, My Antonia, all the Martha and Charlotte books, everything about Beezus and Ramona, Little Women, Brave New World, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Miss Rumphius, Dandelion Wine.
And that's just one mood.
13. What is your favorite play? The first play I ever fell in love with (via reading) was Romeo and Juliet, so of course it still holds a place of privilege. And sniffles.
14. Poem? Too many to name. See all those Poetry Friday posts.
15. Essay? Every one that C.S. Lewis wrote, and Annie Dillard's "God in the Doorway" (which I would probably never have found if not for my friend, Jack.)
16. Who is the most overrated writer alive today? I'm gonna have to say Stephanie Meyer. I just don't get it. Well, I do get it, but I don't care for it.
17. What is your desert island book? In this book meme from awhile back, I said I wanted something with practical tips and hut organizing strategies.
18. And . . . what are you reading right now? I just finished the reread of Fr. Elijah (which falls for me under "spiritual reading" much more strongly than under "fiction" ... such a beautiful book) that I began on Mother's Day; I'm reading Fruitless Fall, by Rowan Jacobsen, and The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. Also, Mother Teresa's Secret Fire, by Jospeh Langford. And, I'm reading The Silver Chair aloud to the kids.

Friends of the Heart

I rarely do these award things, and you know why.
Meme paralysis.
Again.
And again.
But, I'll do this one in honor of Donna, at Moments Like These, who is truly a friend of the heart, and who reminds us that moments like these are what it's all about.
from Donna's blog:
These blogs are exceedingly charming. These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give more attention to these writers.
Deliver this award to eight bloggers who must choose eight more ....
I always rebel against the "must choose others" stuff, and this time is no different. You don't have to do anything, post anything, name anyone.
This is just a small "thank you" for what you add to my life.
So, I'll just tag you and run -- sort of like delivering a May Day basket on your front porch:
Dawn at By Sun and Candlelight
Kristen at Small Treasures
Willa at Sierra Highlands
Liz at On Giants' Shoulders
Melanie at The Wine-Dark Sea
Amy at Epiphany Springs (I remember when you were "A Call to Adventure"!)
Rebecca at A Gypsy Caravan
Donna-Marie at Embracing Motherhood (and, please pray for Donna today -- she is ill with a serious infection, and is in need of prayer!)
Thanks to these ladies, and to the many and varied inspiring blogs out there.
You know who you are.
And, you get my meme paralysis, don't you? So, to all the rest, consider yourself tagged, too, and feel free to spread the hearts and May Day baskets as freely as Miss Rumphius spreads lupine seeds.

A Gaggle of Saints
The inimitable Minnesota Mom tagged me for this meme:
1. First saint you “met?”
That would be St. Augustine.
Compliments of my friend, Jack. Thanks, Jack.
2. Favorite Saint(s)?
St. Mary Magdelene, my confirmation saint.
Our Blessed Mother.
St. Joseph.
St. Teresa of Avila.
St. Therese, for her gifts of roses.
St. John of the Cross.
St. Francis de Sales.
St. Jane de Chantal.
St. Bonaventure.
St. Francis of Assisi.
St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.
St. Cecilia.
St. Catherine of Siena.
St. Bernard of Clairvaux.
Shall I stop?
No ... one more ... Papa John Paul the Great.
And, one more: Our Lady Who Unties Knots. Thanks to Genevieve Kineke for introducing me to her several years ago. My first article for Canticle magazine had somehow gotten separated from my name and contact info. Genevieve (the editor at the time) was down to the wire, and threw up a last minute prayer to Our Lady Who Unties Knots, to identify the writer of the piece, which was scheduled to run very soon. Our Lady Who Unties Knots must have nudged me at the precise moment needed, because I happened to email Genevieve just then, to inquire about the status of the piece. My name was reunited with the article, and it ran in the next issue.
3. Patron saint for the year?
Thank you for reminding me that we have to get back to this!
4. Favorite book by a saint?
Augustine's Confessions, though I have not, in all honesty read all of it.
And, eventually, I'll be able to say, "Everything JPII wrote."
5. Saint book you are reading now?
John Paul II's Book of Saints
6. Favorite movie of a saint?
The Passion of the Christ.
7. Favorite Autobiography/Biography of a saint?
The usual suspects: Confessions, Story of a Soul, Intro to the Devout Life and also, Fr. Thomas DuBay's Fire Within.
8. Favorite novel/book of a saint?
Novels? Hmmm. Novels. I don't know. I'm blank. I'll get back to you.
9. Saint (besides your favorites) you'd want to meet?
Well, of course I'd want to meet my favorites. With my luck, though, I'll get to heaven and get stuck in the room with all the lesser known and duller saints. (I'm kidding, I'm kidding!)
10. Saint you look to for help?
All my favorites, of course, for my many and varied weaknesses.
The duller ones for humility. ;-)
11.Favorite saint quote?
"You have made us for Yourself and our hearts are restless til they rest in You."
~~ St. Augustine
And, of course:
Also, from Augustine, the pithy, "Wake up, O man! For your sake God became man!"
Also reportedly by St. Augustine, but I can't find a source, other than my dear friend, Jack:
"Let good friends be present, when poverty crushes us, or bodily pain tortures us, or we are far apart from those love ... When the world begins to fall apart, let good friends be there, friends who will not only dance at our parties, but weep at our wakes. May we have dear friends who will heal with soothing words. If we have such friends, then surely life's hard edges will be softened, and its burdens made light."
12. Favorite Holy Card?
All my favorites, of course. And I love anything with an image of the Holy Family, or of Madonna and Child.
13. Favorite story of a saint?
Too many to list!
But, I do love the story that Margaret also mentioned, about Teresa of Avila, who questioned God's wisdom during a trial and reportedly received the reply, "You are my friend. this is how I treat all of my friends." To which Teresa quipped (wouldn't you love to quip with the Lord?), "If this is how you treat your friends, it is not surprising that you have so few of them!"
14. If you could go anywhere on a pilgrimage to a saint's homeland, where would it be?
Again, the usual suspects: Lisieux, Fatima, Lourdes and Assisi. Maybe Poland, for my beloved Papa JPII?
15. Any Blesseds or Venerables that you would like to become canonized?
Papa, of course. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha.
*****************
We'll be very busy for the next couple of days and posting will be slight. Go Google for quotes from your favorite saints. It's a treasure trove out there!

Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you!Does it get better than that?
You were within me, but I was outside, and it was there that I searched for you. In my unloveliness I plunged into the lovely things which you created. You were with me, but I was not with you. Created things kept me from you; yet if they had not been in you they would have not been at all.
You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness. You flashed, you shone, and you dispelled my blindness. You breathed you fragrance on me; I drew in breath and now I pant for you.
I have tasted you, now I hunger and thirst for more. You touched me, and I burned for your peace.

The Omnipresent Meme
1. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE ? I was named after my sister, who was born three years before I was. (Anne didn't get that joke. Maybe I shouldn't try to answer memes before 10 a.m. UPDATE: I'm changing this to "I was named three years after my older sister was named" so that no one else things my sister died!)
2. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED? Last week. Don't pry.
3. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING? Yes. If I could write this meme to you, I would.

11. DO YOU UNTIE YOUR SHOES WHEN YOU TAKE THEM OFF? Yes. I must have fat feet.
12. DO YOU THINK YOU ARE STRONG? It depends. Physically? Emotionally? Spiritually? When it comes to Ben and Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk?
13. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ICE CREAM? Ummm ... helloo?! Ben and Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk.
14. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE? Whether or not they like Ben and Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk. And whether or not they are sarcastic. And what kind of lunchbox they have.
15. RED OR PINK? It depends. Room? Couch? Food? Blog?
16. WHAT IS THE LEAST FAVORITE THING YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF? The way I can't answer a straight question.
17. WHO DO YOU MISS THE MOST? Okay, I'll be serious for a moment. I miss -- very, very much -- my dear friends who have moved away. That includes my sister as well as people in New York, Florida, Milford/other parts of Nebraska, Chicago .... the recurring theme of my life is this: If you want to move on to a new place, or get a better job, become my friend. You will move away.
18. WHAT COLOR PANTS AND SHOES ARE YOU WEARING? Are you planning a photo shoot?
19. WHAT WAS THE LAST THING YOU ATE? A piece of chocolate. Yes, it's still morning here. Don't pry.
20. WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW? The sound of Betsy scraping the last of her breakfast out of a bowl.

22. FAVORITE SMELLS? Coffee. Chocolate. A baby's head.
23. WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON YOU TALKED TO ON THE PHONE? A homeschooling friend.
24. FAVORITE SPORTS TO WATCH? This question confuses me. This question implies that I like to watch many sports and must choose one. This is not the case.

26. EYE COLOR? Blue.
27. DO YOU WEAR CONTACTS? About half the time.

30. LAST MOVIE YOU WATCHED? The Phantom of the Opera.
31. WHAT COLOR SHIRT ARE YOU WEARING? White. Dull, boring white. Because I'm a dull, boring middle-aged mom who doesn't bungee jump. And no photo shoot, please.
32. SUMMER OR WINTER? It depends. Summer or winter for what? Stop being so enigmatic. Summer is better for hot weather and winter is better for cold weather. But what does that have to do with my favorite season, which is autumn?
"Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall." (Jordan, in The Great Gatsby)

38. FAVORITE SOUNDS? Silence. Rain. Bach. The voices of the people I love. The voices of the people I love silenced by rain and Bach playing softly in the background.
39. BEATLES OR ROLLING STONES? I've never been a huge fan of either one, but I love the Beatles singing, "Here Comes the Sun" (which has a nice little memory from my spiritual journey attached to it) and the Stones singing "You Can't Always Get What You Want" which does not have an especially nice memory attached to it, but reminds me that I can't always get what I want but I will get what I need. Who knew that Mick was so spiritual?
40. WHAT IS THE FARTHEST YOU HAVE BEEN FROM HOME? I've lived in Massachusetts, Washington state, Alaska, Florida and Nebraska. I like to cover all the bases.

42. WHERE WERE YOU BORN? Buzzard's Bay. Really. It sounds awful, doesn't it? So, we'll be more general and say "Cape Cod" which is also true. Cape Cod sounds much more appealing than Buzzard's Bay, so let's begin again. I was born on Cape Cod, and now you know the rest. Except for the spots where I was being enigmatic. Or sarcastic.
Hellooo?! It's time to say good-bye. This meme is all over the place, so consider yourself tagged if you have a few minutes to waste.

Aw, shucks
I'm embarrassed to do this post, because it seems to be too much about me (though, I guess if I took a close look at my blog, I'd see me, me, me, and ... oh, yeah, look ... over there ... it's me again.)
You know how I feel about memes. I get paralyzed.
But, I do want to thank the following extremely kind and generous women for naming me as a part of their "Mathetes"** list:
Christine at The Simple and the Ordinary
Donna at Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle
Leticia at Causa Nostrae Laetitiae
Meredith at Sweetness and Light
This is quite humbling. Thank you.
And, ultimately, of course, I hope the point is that it's not about me. It's about Him. He does all the work, and yet I get the memes. Somehow it doesn't seem fair, does it?
So, I'm tagging God.
Just kidding.
As to my own list, it would be too long, and would take me all day. There are so many disciples out there ... those who disciple me in my faith, and in my vocation as a wife and mother, in my work as a writer ... the list is endless and so is the gratitude and admiration.
And so, to all of you (those who blog, and those who don't) a heartfelt thank you for all that you do for me.
**the Mathetes (Greek for disciple) Award, created by Dan King of Management by God is "to recognize those who take to heart the Great Commission and further God’s Kingdom by creating more disciples for Him." Dan continues:

Winners of this award must pick five other “disciples” to pass it on to. As you pass it on, I just ask that you mention and provide links for (1)this post as the originator of the award (Dan King of management by God), (2) the person that awarded it to you, and then (3) name and sites of the five that you believe are fulfilling the role of a disciple of Christ.

Random acts of kindness
Jean at Catholic Fire was kind to tag me with a "Nice Matters" meme. A description:
And Beth nominated me for a Blogger Reflection Award:
As I've mentioned before, I tend to get meme paralysis. I never want to leave anyone out or make anyone feel bad. So, I tend to skip the tagging thing and go right to the "Thank you ... good night!" phase.
If I've ever read your blog, corresponded with you online, left you a comment, or otherwise cyber-interacted with you, it's a sure bet I think you're nice. And, if I take the time to visit your blog, you can also bet that you make me think and reflect, and that you have some kind of impact on me.
Welcome to my blog world ... consider yourself tagged.
"... for those bloggers who are nice people; good blog friends and those who inspire good feelings and inspiration. Also for those who are a positive influence on our blogging world .... "
And Beth nominated me for a Blogger Reflection Award:
"... reflect on five bloggers who have been an encouragement, a source of love, impacted you in some way, or have been a Godly example to you. Five Bloggers who when you reflect on them you get a sense of pride and joy… of knowing them and being blessed by them."Thank you, Jean and Beth, for the honor of being named, and for your kindness in taking the time to include me.

Meme: 8 Things about my husband
Elaine at "A Wink and a Smile" tagged me for this one, and although I wonder if you're all tired of hearing factoids about Atticus and me, I'll tackle it anyway.
1. Atticus comes from a family of twelve children. His mother adored babies. Clearly. He has a huge family, relatives we don't even know about.
I, on the other hand, grew up in a family of three children, and each of my parents was an only child. Therefore, I grew up without aunts, uncles or cousins. I can count my entire family on two hands.
2. Atticus didn't used to eat much candy, but then I introduced him to the joys of chocolate with coffee. He still doesn't eat a lot, but he can appreciate a good combo when he tastes it.
He introduced me to the best homemade spaghetti sauce ever, his mother's recipe. He still makes it, and I still love it.
3. He's the gardener. It's thanks to Atticus that we have flowers on the front porch and tomatoes in the back yard. It is only thanks to Atticus that I even know what a Mexican sunflower looks like, that four o'clocks attract hummingbirds (and hummingbird moths,) and that Amaranthus is a plant, not a drink.
I've been known not to garden.
4. Atticus loves to run. Miles at a time.
I, on the other hand, decidedly do not love to run. I've tried it, but the distracting popping sounds from my knee whisper, "Go home ... sit down ... read a good book ... chocolate ... coffee ... " Once settled in with said good book, the voices begin to say things like, "You could really stand to lose a few pounds."
I blame him for the voices.
5. Atticus was a Marine. I grew up as an Air Force brat. However, neither of us is currently in the military.
6. Atticus's favorite poet is Wallace Stevens. Mine is Emily Dickinson. We both liked e.e. cummings, when we met, but Atticus never went through the affected-schoolgirl-phase of writing everything without capital letters in homage to e.e.
i did.
7. Atticus knows everything. Seriously. Ask him a question. Name an obscure figure from history. He's on it. He already knows and can tell you more than Wikipedia will ever dream of knowing, without stammering, "Umm ... yeah ... I've heard of that guy ...." Just try to get through a round of Trivial Pursuit with him without stomping away in disgust at the uneven playing field. His students think he's a genius. He is.
I'm not.
8. Atticus and I are astonishingly different. We made an unlikely couple. People thought it would never last, for reasons that would take seventeen memes to detail.
It lasted. And we're so happy it did.
If you're married, you're tagged.

It's raining memes
And, here are the ones I've been tagged for (and thanks to everyone who tagged me. From the bottom of the heart of a girl who was always chosen last for softball, thank you, she said, remembering how she used to stand in the outfield and pray -- even before she believed in God -- for the ball to end up anywhere but near her.)
Matilda tagged me as a rockin' girl blogger, and I'm rocked to the core.

In turn, I'm tagging these rockin' bloggers:
Sister Julie, at A Nun's Life.
Melanie, at The Wine-Dark Sea.
Kelly, at Big A little a.
Leonie, at Living Without School (check out the green boots).
Ruth, especially for taking the time to compile the Meezes (and, yes, I'm finally getting to mine ....) of lots of mommies.
*****
Nutmeg tagged me with "A Picture of Now, Between Past and Future" and here are my answers:
1.a. Describe your outfit.
Black capris and a white t-shirt
b. What associations does the main color invoke?
The opposite colors make me think of the conflicting (can you say "schizophrenic"?) parts of me. I remember taking a personality inventory at work, years ago, and I was told they'd never seen an odder combination of traits. Hmmm ....
c. Is there a memory associated with this outfit (or part of it)?
Not a memory, just the overall impression of my wardrobe: scaled down and simple.
2.a. Are you listening to music?
No.
b. Was this intentional?
No.
c. What does the music make you remember?
The absence of it makes me remember that, as Nutmeg's tag line says, "It's not that easy, 'cause my time is often decided for me."
3.a. Describe the objects within arms' reach.
My coffee cup, a postcard from Belgium, the family wall calendar, a Willow Tree figurine holding a book, pages from Faith and Family offering ideas for July and August, my glasses, headphones, a stack of library receipts.
b. Choose one object and tell where you acquired it.
I bought the coffee cup for Atticus. It was on sale for $2, and I liked the shape of it -- the simple white cup, with the word "coffee" climbing up the side -- and thought he would think it was perfect. But, it's a little too feminine for his taste. (We once had a similar conversation about a water bottle. A water bottle, people.)
c. On the whole, are the objects new (memory blanks) or old (memory filled)?
Hmmmm ... these things are all part of my current life, or fairly recently given to me. Although, I have worn glasses since I was ten years old. Not the same pair continuously, mind you. I don't think pink cat-eyes
would become me now.
4.a. What room are you in?
The kitchen. We're experimenting with moving the computer in here. I like it.
b. To what extent is it yours?
Half-and half. I organize it, maintain it (mostly) and turn it into Learning Central. But, Atticus-the-Great handles the weekend and summer cooking, and I don't know if I've ever cleaned an oven in my life. Don't you love him?
c. What kind of memories will you have in the future of this room?
Great, great, great. Read-alouds, family meals, laughter ... it's all here.
5. What were you doing before starting this post, and what would you like to do next?
I was drinking coffee, reading some blogs, and thinking about how I shouldn't have chocolate for breakfast.
What I'd like to do next is drink coffee, read some blogs, and have breakfast.
*****
And, finally, Renaissance Mom Kristen, at Small Treasures, tagged me to "play dress-up" with Meez. And, I came up with a really cute mom with a coffee cup (of course) and a snuggly room with a fire, but I can't get the Meezy thing to work. Arrgghh.
I'll try again soon, and then will be on the lookout for the next shower of memes!
Update: I got the Meez to export ... here I am, ready to settle in with a cup of coffee and a good book ....

Marriage Meme
This one's an old meme. Jean at Catholic Fire tagged me awhile back and I started it, but it got buried in my Drafts file. So, here it is, popping up on a Saturday morning, like a good friend ready to fill in for me when I'm too tired to go to work.
1. Where/How did you meet?
In college -- i.e., in a previous life.
Don't believe in reincarnation? I do -- it's just that it happens during this life, not after. It's called redemption. In other words -- the people we met back then? Not the people we are now.
2. How long have you known each other?
27 years.
3. How long after you met did you start dating?
I knew Atticus vaguely when I was a freshman. He was an ex-Marine who scared me. My best friend said he had the handwriting of an axe murderer.
I found out later that Atticus saw me in a play that year (I played the part of an 80-year-old woman dying of cancer) and said to himself, "I'm going to marry her." I was relieved to find out that he based this on my picture in the program rather than on how I looked onstage (although, it was a truly awful picture, proving that he's always had quirky taste in women.)
A couple of years later, he was in a play, and I thought he looked dashing rather than scary. I made my move.
4. How long did you date before you were engaged?
That depends on what you mean by date and by engaged.
5. How long was your engagement?
About three weeks. I said, "Hey, my parents will be in town for my sister's wedding. Should we get married that weekend, too?" He said okay.
I'm not kidding.
6. How long have you been married?
23 years, to everyone's surprise.
7. What is your anniversary?
The feast day of St. Thomas Aquinas (though clearly we had no idea at the time.)
8. How many people came to your wedding reception?
About 15.
9. What kind of cake did you serve?
One that served 15.
10. Where was your wedding?
In the courthouse. We were married by a judge (a valid marriage in the eyes of the Church, by the way, as neither of us was Catholic nor had we been raised Catholic. The marriage became a sacramental one six years later, when I was baptized; Atticus had been baptized in the Lutheran church as an infant. We didn't have to "do anything" about our marriage when I, and later Atticus, became Catholic.)
11. What did you serve for your meal?
Everyone ordered his or her own meal at a restaurant.
12. How many people were in your bridal party?
Two -- the matron of honor and the best man.
13. Are you still friends with them all?
My sister is still my friend, thank goodness. And, yes, we still stay in touch with the best man, who was a former college professor.
I almost had my best friend, Jack, act as my "man of honor" but ended up deciding on my sister.( I was, however, the "best woman" at Jack's wedding.)
14. Did your spouse cry during the ceremony?
I don't think so.
15. Most special moment of your wedding day?
Realizing I was actually married, that I was actually Mrs. Edmisten (although, I didn't change my name for seven or eight years.)
16. Any funny moments?
No -- unless you count our entire way of doing things.
17. Any big disasters?
No -- unless you count our entire way of doing things.
18. Where did you go on your honeymoon?
We didn't go anywhere right away, but went to Florida about six months later.
19. How long were you gone?
Long enough to get a really bad sunburn, eat a lot of shrimp, and go to Disney World.
20. If you were to do your wedding over, what would you change?
On the one hand, everything. I've sometimes wondered what a normal wedding would have been like.
On the other hand, nothing. God took the raw material of who and what we were, and here we are today, by His grace. Can I improve upon His handiwork?
21. What side of the bed do you sleep on?
The side children always seem to show up on.
22. What size is your bed?
Big enough for both of us, a cat, and sometimes a child, though I sleep better without a small child's feet in my face.
23. Greatest strength as a couple?
That we both really love being home together, we both really love being parents, and we -- finally -- share our faith.
24. Greatest challenge as a couple?
Agreeing on the date night video.
25. Who literally pays the bills?
I sit down to do the paperwork, overflowing with gratitude that Atticus supports the mission of a stay-at-home mom.
26. What is your song?
Nat King Cole singing, The Christmas Song. Very sweet story behind it.
27. What did you dance your first dance to?
At our wedding? Or ever? If it's "ever" it's probably something that involved pogoing.
28. Describe your wedding dress:
It was a simple dress, probably not worth describing to those who enjoy such things ... I've never been good at describing much of anything about clothing. Most of the time, my eyes glaze over and I'm lost when it comes to talking fabrics, beads and accessories.
29. What kind of flowers did you have at your wedding?
At the time, I was sort of the same way about flowers that I was about dresses and fabrics.
But, if I were to marry Atticus again, I would want just a few roses, to thank St. Therese for her intercession over the years.
30. Are your wedding bands engraved?
No. They're simple, plain gold bands. I didn't want an engagement ring, either, because we didn't really do the whole engagement thing and I've never cared much about diamonds.
But, I treasure my plain, gold band. It's been through a lot with us.

Eight Things Meme
I was tagged for this meme by Susan at Chicken Spaghetti. (Gosh ... just when I'd sworn off memes, too. I always seem to end up saying or revealing something silly or embarrassing....)Rules:
"For this meme, each player lists 8 facts/habits about themselves. The rules of the game are posted at the beginning before those facts/habits are listed. At the end of the post, the player then tags 8 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know that they have been tagged and asking them to read your blog."
Alrighty. I can handle that. Here are my eight:
1. I drink too much coffee. Turning on the coffee pot is the first thing I do in the morning, and sometimes I actually dream about doing it. Yup. I really look forward to my coffee.
2. I usually drink my coffee black, though I also love it with cream, or with milk. I can drink regular or flavored coffee, but I never, never, never add sugar. Ever. Unless I'm having one of those lavishly sugared-up cappuccinos and then I relish the sweetness, but that's not really coffee.
3. I eat too much chocolate.
4. I love milk chocolate, dark chocolate, chocolate with nuts, chocolate truffles, chocolate with toffee, caramel and chocolate, chocolate with peanut butter ... almost any kind of chocolate except chocolate-covered cherries. Can. not. handle. them.
5. I always volunteer for Vacation Bible School. I always -- by the second day -- wonder why in the world I volunteered for Vacation Bible School. I always, by the last day, am so happy that I volunteered for Vacation Bible School.
6. I was blessed to know (and to have great relationships with) all four of my wonderful grandparents well into my adulthood. The last of them passed away when I was 40.
7. When I was six years old, I had a crush on Jonny Quest.
8. Atticus is in charge of meals on the weekends. I love that. I love him for that. He cooked for me on our first date, and I fell completely, instantly in love. A reader, a writer, a scholar, a poet's soul, and a cook? I was a goner.

Thinking of Thinking Bloggers
Kathryn, of The Bookworm, and Jennifer of As Cozy as Spring, tagged me as a "Thinking Blogger" and so I've been busy thinking ....
What is the Thinking Blogger Award? Well, it's not really an award (so, don't go away, Becky) -- it's really just another meme. Apparently it started here at The Thinking Blog. And (just as one would think) it took off, as do most memes.
It comes with three rules:
1. Write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think.
2. Link to The Thinking Blog so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme.
3. Optional: Proudly display the ‘Thinking Blogger Award’ with a link to the post that you wrote.
Okay, okay, five blogs that make me think ....
Only five? Oh, come now. That's ridiculous. Obviously I could name many more, but I'll play by the rules and get started.
But first, a Major Disclaimer: Many, many, many of you whom I would name have already been named elsewhere, or you tagged me, or you already know that you make me think. So, please don't think that I think that you don't think. Of course you think, and I know that you think, and I think you're great. End of disclaimer. (Can you tell that memes paralyze me because I worry about leaving someone out? Oh, Karen. Get a life.)
I'm thinking I'll name:
Mike Aquilina at The Way of the Fathers ... he makes me think about Church history, and about how much more I have to learn. Always. And, he makes me think of puns, most of which I don't leave in his comment box. But he is, most definitely, the Blog King of Puns.
Jim Manney at People of the Book ... he makes me think about writing and publishing, literature and poetry. He sometimes makes me think about baseball, but never for very long (my flaw, not his.)
Becky at Farm School ... she makes me think about all kinds of things related to culture, books, movies and education, including making me think about how much I enjoy her wit and her outlook.
Liz at On Giants' Shoulders ... makes me think about how we all need a homeschooling mentor and friend. She was there in my pre-homeschooling days, when I was asking the most basic questions, and she's there for me still. And, she still ponders our Catholic faith, our conversions, the works of Chesteron, and how to best teach everything from literature to knitting.
Alice at Cottage Blessings ... makes me think about the beauty of Catholic motherhood and about how to teach the depth and riches of our faith to our children by truly living that faith in every way, from crafts for the liturgical year to devotions that come from her heart.
Who makes you think?

Book/movie meme
I was tagged by Amy and Jean for this meme. Please don't throw anything at me because I haven't read Tolkien. I'm getting to it. Really. Sort of. I read The Hobbit when I was in seventh grade and loved it (and just started it as a read-aloud with the girls.) But, I've tried the Rings Trilogy three times, but just can't get into it. Am I hopeless?
Book/Movie Meme: Underline or put an asterisk next to all those books whose movies you have seen. Bold or highlight the ones you've read in a different color.
1. Heidi (Johanna Spyri) *
2. Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen)
3 To Kill A Mockingbird (Harper Lee) *
4. Gone With The Wind (Margaret Mitchell) *
5. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (Tolkien)
6. The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (Tolkien)
7. The Lord of the Rings: Two Towers (Tolkien) *
8. Anne of Green Gables (L.M. Montgomery) *

Lenten meme
What is your favorite Sorrowful Mystery?
"Favorite" isn't exactly the word I'd use in connection with the Sorrowful Mysteries ... when I think of "my favorite things" I'm usually thinking of the things that bring me laughter, joy, calories and wakefulness (coffee, my husband, my daughters, chocolate, a glass of Merlot, friends and family ... I'll leave it to you to sort out which brings me which.)
The Sorrowful Mysteries bring a different and solemn kind of joy and wakefulness in the contemplation of them. Contemplating the Carrying of the Cross keeps me alert to what our Lord did for me, and to what He asks me to do every day. Each of the mysteries does this, of course, but for me, the Carrying of the Cross is the one I go back to most often, identify with most completely, and love most deeply.
What is your favorite Station of the Cross?
Of course they are all profoundly affecting, but one that speaks powerfully to me is the Fourth Station, Jesus meets His mother. A variation on this that I love is a set of stations used by Pope John Paul II. In these stations, the twelfth is "Jesus speaks to His mother and the disciple."
Do you fast during Lent?
Yes, in various ways and from various foods and/or things.
What is your Lenten Resolution(s)?
I'm going to keep my personal resolutions private for now. That way, I think I'm less likely to complain about them. My family knows (at least they know the ones that show outwardly), but I'm trying not to talk about it much.
That's not to say that I think it's wrong to share with friends what one is giving up -- I think it can be a great thing, and a source of support for us to encourage one another, give each other ideas, and the like.
As far as our family, my children have given up complaining. The only problem with this is that since Sundays aren't part of Lent, and we never fast on a "little Easter" my girls jokingly said, "We can complain all we want on Sunday!" This was followed by much giggling -- which leads me to a post I keep meaning to write: "Do we give up 'something good' or 'something bad' for Lent?" I'll get to it soon ....
We're also following Operation Rice Bowl, and I like the email updates, the calendar for home use, and the discussions it has sparked about hunger and working conditions around the world.
Do you use Holy Water during Lent?
We have it around all the time, and love having holy water fonts in several locations in the house.
How many times do you go to Mass during Lent?
I'm taking the girls to a daily Mass one extra time a week.
Thank you, Matilda, for the tag! And I tag anyone who'd like to respond ... and if you do, will you let me know?

Homemaking meme
Last night, as I was making dinner and mucking up what should have been an easy soup, it occurred to me that there's a reason no one has tagged me for the homemaking meme that's going around.Hmmmm.
I'm going to do it anyway.
Aprons – Y/N
Sometimes. Sometimes it's an Alton Brown "I'm Just Here for the Food" apron, and sometimes it's a really cute, Christmas-y one that my dear friend Heather made for me. If I'm cooking with the girls, we all put on the aprons that Heather made for us. I wish I were a Heather.
Baking – Favorite thing to bake:
Chocolate chip cookies. (Oh, wait. Did you say to bake? Or to make in order to eat some dough?)
And brownies. (Assuming they are frosted.)
Clothesline – Y/N?
Yes, but I don't use it enough.
Donuts – Have you ever made them?
No! Alice said that pans full of hot oil scare her. Ditto. I don't even like to fry hamburger.
Every day – One homemaking thing you do every day:
Dishes by hand.
Freezer – Do you have a separate deep freeze?
Yes. I love it. If you had told me twenty years ago that there would come a day in my life when I would use "love" and "my deep freeze" in the same sentence, I would have been very frightened about what my future held.
Garbage Disposal – Y/N?
No. :-/
Handbook – What is your favorite homemaking resource?
You guys.
Ironing – Love it or hate it?
I hate thinking about it. Actually doing it is never as bad as I think it will be, but I so hate the thought of it that I don't do it enough. I guess we're rumpled.
Junk drawer – Y/N? Where is it?
I have a junk basket. It's on top of the fridge.
Kitchen: Design & Decorating?
Am I supposed to decorate in here?
(No, really, I do want to change it, because the previous owner's taste is not mine, though it's pretty neutral. But I'm not sure what to do with it.)
Love – What is your favorite part of homemaking?
The opportunity, luxury, and blessing of being home with my favorite people in the whole wide world.
Mop – Y/N?
I don't understand the question. Do I own a mop? Yes. How often do I use it? Well, I know I chose to do this meme, but some things are quite personal ....
Nylons – Wash by hand or in the washing machine?
I don't have enough affection for them to wash them by hand.
Oven – Do you use the window or open the oven to check?
I do both, depending on what's in there.
Pizza – What do you put on yours?
Pepperoni and green olives. Sometimes we do a white pizza -- chicken and alfredo sauce.
Quiet – What do you do during the day when you get a quiet moment?
Write. Think. Pray. And -- I never thought I'd say this -- knit.
Recipe card box – Y/N?
Yes. A gift from Atticus a few years back, when I asked for one. I recently organized it and now I use it quite a bit.
Style of house –
Ranch.
Tablecloths and napkins – Y/N?
Tablecloth, sometimes, for company. Paper napkins.
Under the kitchen sink – Organized or toxic wasteland?
It's an organized land of toxic waste.
Vacuum – How many times per week?
A couple.
Break up fights related to vacuuming -- how many times a week?
A couple.
(No, not that they fight over who gets to do it ... it's things like, "She wouldn't move when I had to vacuum that spot!")
Wash – How many loads of laundry do you do per week?
I've never counted. I do some laundry from start to finish each day, as I don't like to let it pile up.
X’s – Do you keep a daily list of things to do that you cross off?
Yes.
Yard – Y/N? Who does what?
Yes. We love our yard. Atticus does almost everything out there, including the garden. My job out there is to play with the kids and say things like, "I think we should try growing something new in our garden...."
Zzz’s – What is your last homemaking task for the day before going to bed?
Turn off the space heater next to the computer, and kiss my husband, and thank him for thinking that the soup I thought I'd mucked up was delicious.
(Soup photo thanks to Image Chef.)

Catholic Devotions Meme
Margaret tagged me.
1. Favorite devotion or prayer to Jesus?
The Jesus prayer ("Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.")
Also, a novena of Holy Communions.
2. Favorite Marian devotion or prayer?
The Rosary and the Memorare.
3. Do you wear a scapular or medal?
A brown scapular medal. And I wear a crucifix that looks like this. I rarely wear any other necklace.
4. Do you have holy water in your home?
Yes.
5. Do you ‘offer up’ your sufferings?
Yes. I remember, after coming into the Church, the first time I was conscious of wasting some minor suffering. I'd had the stomach flu for two days, and at the end of the second day, it struck me that instead of moaning about how rotten I felt, I could have been offering up every bit of it. I felt so selfish and foolish. It was a turning point.
6. Do you observe First Fridays and First Saturdays?
No, not as consistently as I'd like to. It's on the goal list. First Saturdays are often our family confession days, though.
7. Do you go to Eucharistic Adoration?
Yes. It keeps me sane.
8. Are you a Saturday evening Mass person or Sunday morning Mass person?
Sunday morning.
9. Do you say prayers at mealtime?
Yes.
10. Favorite Saint(s)?
Oh, my goodness. How much time do we have?
St. Mary Magdelene, my confirmation saint. St. Teresa of Avila. St. Therese, for her gifts of roses. St. John of the Cross. St. Francis de Sales. St. Jane de Chantal. St. Bonaventure. St. Francis of Assisi. St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. St. Cecilia. St. Catherine of Siena. St. Bernard of Clairvaux. Shall I stop?
No ... one more ... Papa John Paul the Great.
11. Can you recite the Apostles Creed by heart?
Oh, my, I should hope so.
12. Do you usually say short prayers (aspirations) during the course of the day?
Yes ... I try to stay in constant touch ... I need it so much.
13. Bonus Question: When you pass by an automobile accident or other serious mishap, do you say a quick prayer for the folks involved?
Yes. If I forget, Ramona reminds me. This habit has become so familiar to her that she will often include in our nightly prayers, "And for all the people who needed sirens today."
And one more bonus question (Helen’s, I believe): If you could visit any of Our Lady’s apparition sites, which one would you choose?
Lourdes.
And now ... I tag you.
