This is a lovely, short, just-right piece. I especially like the last lines:
And my hopes and fears are met/In this small singer holding onto my hand./Onward we go, faithfully, into the dark...
December
by Gary Johnson
A little girl is singing for the faithful to come ye
Joyful and triumphant, a song she loves,
And also the partridge in a pear tree
And the golden rings and the turtle doves.
In the dark streets, red lights and green and blue
Where the faithful live, some joyful, some troubled,
Enduring the cold and also the flu,

I didn't realize that a poem ending with "Hark" was exactly what I wanted. Thanks, Karen, for hitting just the right note of hopes, fears, and hand holding. Merry Christmas! xo
Oh, that is a lovely one. Thank you, Tabatha!
Oooh, I love that it ends on "Hark," too. I can picture the tiny singer. Thank you, Karen. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
* Tabatha, I was taken by surprise too. 😊 It’s just so lovingly done.
* Laura, so glad you enjoyed it!
* Susan, doesn't that tiny singer make the whole thing work? Merry Christmas to you and yours, too!
Karen, thanks for the lovely poem that has an interesting blend of lines from holiday hymns. You always seem to find the right poems to share.
Karen, I enjoyed Johnson’s poem, and the note below it reminded me that we’ve arrived at the shortest day of the year! To me that always feels like an accomplishment and that things will look up with more sunlight. Thank you for the reminder that things are getting sunnier!
It all comes down to the "and yet..." doesn't it?
Carol, that's so kind of you, thank you!
Thank you for introducing me to this new poem. It is perfect isn't it. I agree with Mary Lee, it comes down to "yet"
* Tracey, yes, my daughter and I were just discussing the solstice yesterday! Huzzah for more sunight! :D
* Mary Lee, yes, that "and yet" is what helps us keep going, turn the corner, hark.
Jone, I'm so glad you liked it too. Yes, "and yet"... :)
Thanks for this enjoyable and informative post, Karen. My holiday is odd this year as I'm back with my dad and for that reason, the words of the poem resonate with me. Merry Christmas. Love the winter solstice because days get longer now.
Onward we go, harking... so lovely! Thank you!
Carol, thinking of you this Christmas, and yes, looking so forward to the days getting longer. ❤️
Harking all the way, Irene! :) ❤️
Karen, thank you for choosing another wonderful poem for us to read. Happy Holidays.
Beautiful ending inviting/prompting us to listen, and perhaps in a deeper way…Thanks Karen, wishing you much merrymaking!
