Poetry Friday: Emily Dickinson's To-Do List

With a new school year approaching, I'm in list-making mode, much like my beloved Emily Dickinson in Andrea Carlisle's take on the Belle of Amherst's days.

Now I am off to decide what to wear, what to bake, and what to hide.

Emily Dickinson's To-Do List
by Andrea Carlisle

Monday
Figure out what to wear—white dress?
Put hair in bun
Bake gingerbread for Sue
Peer out window at passersby
Write poem
Hide poem

Tuesday
White dress? Off-white dress?
Feed cats
Chat with Lavinia
....

(Read the rest here, at The Writer's Almanac.)

The round up is at My Juicy Little Universe.

I love this poem, have used it as a mentor text with my students. It is clever, isn't it? Thanks, Karen.

Poor Emily. If only she had lived today. What colors might she have flown. It's a great poem.

I so enjoyed reading this poem though it left me melancholy. As Brenda said, Poor Emily.

I don't spend much time deciding what to wear or hide, but I'll save you some time on what to bake:

https://smittenkitchen.com/2007/12/caramel-cake/

This cake is quick to make, and there's not too much of it. It's such a good basic cake that it begs for all kinds of different toppings. Read her notes and you won't have the thick thick caramel in the picture. (The caramel sauce itself is quick and easy and begs to be made just for some ice cream or even just a spoon!!)

The group for whom I baked this agreed that perhaps a thick fresh cranberry reduction would be a great topping. Let me know what you/yours think!!

Thanks for that, Mary Lee! I will have to try that one.

I love Smitten Kitchen. Her granola bars are to die for!

Love this! It's best to hide everything - until one knows what to do with it, I suppose!

Thanks for sharing this poem, Karen. I love that Emily puts "Peer out window at passersby" on her To Do list. We should all do the same everyday. =)

That hosting slot just didn't work for me--this is my first clear moment (that I wasn't too exhausted to think) this week! My apologies for the late comment....

Wow. I've never read all that about Emily. I love the poem, the tongue in cheek, the mystery. Thanks, Karen!
