Cranky because the explosions have become the meaning of the holiday? Or cranky because you're just no fun? Have to admit, we're in high clover down here in Missouri, exploding things all day!
Funny. I half expected your crabby haiku to be about soft-shell crabs or something (I'm currently on the Delmarva peninsula, and there are softshell crabs on all menus, it seems). I'm not a fan of the booming fireworks either, but I do like the pretty ones.
Amy, your take is far more introspective than mine. Cranky just because I'm no fun. :-) I just find the popping and exploding and bang, bang, bang all week boring. :-) We will go to a big, smashing public show, though, and I'll oooh and aaah with everyone, because it is pretty spectacular, though I can never help crabbing about the other ways that money could have been spent ....
I am afraid I feel just the same as you. Far better ways to spend all that money, on people who need the investment. I'd rather celebrate independence quietly with a grateful heart.

Sad but true.
