That's one way to look at it

Yesterday, we went on a field trip to our local newspaper, courtesy of my friend Linda the Organizer. The tour included not only the inner workings of the press, but also a side trip through a recycling display.

Our tour guide, Sarah, a sweet, energetic, outgoing young woman (it wore me out just watching her) eagerly told the kids all about ways to recycle, conserve energy and save the environment. She quoted various statistics, explaining, for example, that recycling x number of cans saves enough energy to power a lightbulb or an appliance for x number of hours (if I hadn't been busy with Ramona, perhaps I could be more specific. I didn't learn a lot, other than the fact that Ramona's not yet interested in recycling her very-occasional soda can.)

Later, as Betsy recounted her favorite parts of the trip to Atticus, she interpreted said statistics thusly:

"Daddy, did you know that if we recycle our aluminum cans we can watch more TV?"

Sigh.
