Poetry Friday: The Hills We Climb by Amanda Gorman

I've climbed a lot of hills over the years. Oh, numerous hills, of multiple heights — over my lifetime, in the last four years, during this pandemic, and in the last two months of my parents' fight against Covid. So today's poem, by the lovely Amanda Gorman, written for the inauguration of Joe Biden and recited with grace and passion, seems fitting.

To all of you who have been so supportive and kind as both my parents battled Covid, I'm pleased to finally report that, while their fight isn't over yet, they are both progressing and improving every day. Thank you.

  7. I'm so sorry your parents are ill! I'm glad they are recovering. What a nightmare but, if we're lucky, it just might be over later this year. I hope.

  11. Karen, with faith and prayer your parents are getting better. That is such marvelous news. Hill-climbing is a part of life but it is how we face the challenge that makes the difference. God bless your parents.

  12. I remember when my husband and I were on a bicycle trip once, and every time we would ask people if there were a lot of hills ahead, they would always say no, no hills, it's very flat. And then we would find that they were completely wrong. Because hills seem really different in a car from the way they seem on a bicycle. We have had SO many hills to climb lately, and we have been on bicycles, or on foot, or maybe crawling on our knees. I'm so glad your parents are doing better.
