Poetry Friday: A Meme Poem

Susan, at Chicken Spaghetti, invited us to join her in a meme poem, ala Donika Kelly. Kelly’s inspiration was a meme from 2017, so I went back to see what else made the rounds that year. Remember this grand entrance? As Professor Robert Kelly conducted an interview with the BBC, his daughter marched into the room, her baby brother rollered in behind her, and then his wife rocketed in to retrieve the uninvited interview guests.

Here’s the video that went viral:

And here’s my poem:

Life Interrupted

Oh, sweetheart,
March!
Burst on the scene,
exultant.
Jubilant.
Lead the parade.
Insert yourself.
Settle in, take up space.
Suck the marrow of life.
Act like you own it, baby.
Because you do.

I remember that baby! That was such a hoot. "Act like you own it, baby" is just the best. Love this whole poem.

Terrific Karen, you captured it all and so dashingly with his little tike so triumphantly sashaying in, thanks! 😊

Thanks for making me laugh all over again! What a moment! I love how your poem speaks to both the baby and us, to both then and now. (I also love that we both wrote poems of advice!)

* Susan, thanks so much! This was a fun idea. Thanks for sharing it.

* Thanks, Michelle! Sashay she did, lol.

* Mary Lee, yes, thank you, I was going for that layer of interpretation. Can’t wait to read your advice too!

In a funny connection, your poem reminds me of one I wrote a while back about the Bride of Frankenstein! I would have never guessed the similarity but there you are :) xo

I love this video SO MUCH. That wee girl laid me out that day, marching in while her brother, following, was led cheerfully into temptation, all oblivious. Mama's skidding around the corner to save the day (with Dad sitting in shorts and unable to help) still sends me into gales. "Act like you own it, baby," indeed. I was always proud that the parents owned that moment, too. Yep, sometimes life is just slightly out of control. Oh, well. You live with it, and if you're wise, you remember the moment with a wry smile. Thanks, Karen, this is so good.

I remember seeing this interview as it made the rounds on social media. It is still laughable and at the same time I feel for him. Kids - you've got to love them! Thanks for the joy!

Hahaha - great choice and such a fun poem, Karen! Hopefully that "baby" is still owning it. Thanks for sharing!

* Tabatha, I'm laughing at the Bride of Frankenstein comparison. Own it, baby! Lol!

* elli, I know what you mean — 2017 feels like a lifetime ago.

* Jama, I remember a follow-up interview with the couple and they took it in stride. :)

* Thanks so much, Mona! (P.S. I tried to visit your post last week but had trouble getting there. I'll look for you this week!)

* Tanita, I remember when I first saw it too. I laughed so hard! I had never thought about the dad wearing shorts under that desk. Of course, because don't we all when we think only the "Zoom-top-half" will be seen? :D I remember the follow-up, too, with the parents owning it. Love it! Thanks.

* Carol, yes, you can tell that he just wasn't sure what to do, poor guy. :)

* Thanks, Rose! As soon as I stumbled on this one, I knew I'd found my meme poem.

* Robyn, yes, I hope that little girl is still taking up space and owning every room she enters. :)

Thanks y'all for the encouragement. I dashed this poem off yesterday while struggling with vertigo and I hoped my dizziness hadn't turned into a dizzy post. :)

Hahahahaha! March has two meanings...my first thought was of the month of March that covid interupted...which added a bit of dark humor to the rest of the lines. Well played!

Linda, I like your interpretation — that's great! Thanks so much! :)

Karen, thanks for the sweet reminder of this viral clip. So fun. Your poem points out some important advice when life is interrupted.
