In olden times in England, the Laureate’s salary used to include an allotment of wine...The UK revived the tradition in 1972, and their poet laureate receives a barrel of sherry. The current U.S. Poet Laureate, Juan Felipe Herrera, was just appointed to a second term.

A barrel of sherry! That's a fine payment (I wonder whether sherry improves one's poetry!)
So funny to think about a barrel of sherry being delivered. I guess it's a fine, but impersonal, gift, right?
I think the U.S. Poet Laureate should receive a barrel of chocolate -- proven inspiration for writers of all stripes. :)
Ohio finally has a poet laureate, and I met him and got a book autographed to add to my collection of autographed books by poets laureate!
Buffy and Linda: Yes, sherry = fine but impersonal
Jama: Chocolate = perfection
Mary Lee: Autographed books by poets laureate = happy Poetry Fridayers
