Poetry Friday: Ramona's Haiku

One of Ramona's best friends had an idea for their writing group. They were each to compose three haiku about animals, then read the poems aloud to one another, and guess the animals that have been immortalized in five syllables, then seven, then five.

Here are Ramona's contributions:

Large, and hairy, too.
Sharp teeth, glowing eyes as well.
I'm gonna say ... Yuck.

Hippity, hop, hop.
Fluffy and adorable.
I have lots of them.

Slow and steadily
makes its way across my yard.
Hey! Don't be so shy!

(Answers in the comments. And, fyi, I was wrong and far too narrow-thinking on the first one.)

Irene Latham has the round up at Live Your Poem.

Ramona's first haiku is about the Rodents of Unusual Size in The Princess Bride. :)

#2 is about bunnies, of course. The "lots of them" at our house are stuffed. I don't think live ones would appreciate our dog or our cat.

#3 Looking forward to the weather that brings turtles to our yard.

What a great writing group idea!

Ramona's first haiku was tricky! Of course, now that you say it, I totally see it :-)

Oh, I was going to say WEREWOLVES, or else raccoons... really, nothing else gets the "glowing eyes" thing going. However, ROUS is a pretty darned good answer for most things.

I thought snail, not turtle at first... and then thought, "Wait. We don't usually invite them to, you know, hang out..."

I thought werewolf on the first reading, too! I didn't think of raccoons, only because she ended it with "Yuck" and I know she thinks raccoons (having never encountered one in real life) are cute. :)

And I had the same thought about snails for the third one, but realized it was a turtle when she invited it to hang out. :)

Ha! I was thinking some kind of slug or insect. :) Totally got bunnies. My favorite is the shy turtle. Nice!

Ramona, what a fun activity. I definitely did not guess the first animal. Are you thinking of a haiku for the Winter Whisperings Gallery?

I thought the first one was raccoons too, Karen. All very fun, & a great activity. I like that 'Hey@ Don't be so shy!"

Karen, I had to stop by to see Ramona's haiku. For many years, the only Ramona I ever met (besides me) was in a book. I got the second one, and I was excited that you had bunnies! We've always had a lot of the stuffed kind too - so many that I decorate our mantles with them in the springtime! Such a fun activity for the writing group

Love that Ramona has a group of writerly friends who give themselves fun challenges like this!

Mary Lee, yes I love the way my girls have all embraced writing, as well as sharing their writing with friends who also love to write.

Ramona, I'm afraid my "Ramona" is blog-named for Ramona Quimby, so it's not her real name, but I'm so happy to have another Ramona stop by. :)

Linda and Irene, the shy turtle is my favorite, too. :)

Rodents of Unusual Size! Oh heck, I should've known. I hope we get to read more of these girls' poetry. :)

I have a feeling, Michelle, that they'll be assigning themselves more challenges. :)
