Why I Love My Kids: Reason # Harry Potter

Recently, when we were making plans regarding the movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, I asked the girls if they even wanted me to go with them to the movie at all.

I said, "Do you even want me there? Don't you just want to go with your friends?"

Anne-with-an-e replied, "Mom, we started this thing together and we're gonna finish it together."

(The final plan includes both me and one of their oldest and dearest friends. So. Fun.)

Awww. That's incredibly inclusive of them. But then - those are the kids you have. :)

Awww, thanks, Tanita. :)

How wonderful! Hope you have a great time together!

*(Curious to know...has Ramona been in on the Harry Potter phenomenon too, since she has older siblings? I've held off with "my Ramona" -- although she knows I love the books. In fact, she undoubtedly remembers standing in line with me to pick up Deathly Hallows -- I think she told me it was the biggest book she'd ever seen -- and then watching me begin to devour it. In the car. On the way home. I've been debating about when to introduce the books as family read-aloud and am thinking of waiting a couple of years still and plowing some other fantasy territory first...finishing our read-through of Narnia, and maybe going on the Prydain Chronicles.)

Wow. Now *that* is a long parenthetical aside! :)

Beth, so far, I have read only the first HP book to Ramona, and I skipped some things. She's a fan, as far as that first book goes. But I'm waiting on reading the second one to her and I haven't decided yet how old she'll be before she hears that one. :)

She loves the Narnia books, too. Right now, I'm in the middle of reading The Last Battle to her.

Karen, we're up to The Last Battle too, which I think we will likely read before the year is out. We've stretched the Narnia books out so long that I think S. has almost forgotten The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, so I'm hoping to remedy that with a re-read sometime in the new year. So far, of all the Narnia books, she has loved The Magician's Nephew the most, I think.

I'm thinking of saving HP until she's at least 10!

I just have recently found your blog as I heard you on the radio talking about your new book, Through the year with Mary. I hate to be negative here but I see your post on Harry Potter. Funny enough tonight my mom just heard Christine Watkins speaking on the radio about Harry Potter and why we should not even go there.
Also, here is a Catholic link you may want to check out...

I fortuntately have no interest in the books, so it is not really a bummer for me!!

I am still going to buy your book! I just wanted to point this out as it was strange how my mom just mentioned this info to me tonight and then I see this on your blog...

Beth, we stretched the Narnia books out a bit, too, and I think ten will probably be a good age to move on in the HP series for us, too. Right now, it's on indefinite hold, and we have a lot of other things in our queue! :)

Katie, thanks for stopping by, and I hope you like the new book! And thank you for your other comments. I don't think of disagreements as negativity, so no problem there. :) I've read extensively on the HP controversies, and I respectfully disagree with the Catholic critics I've read. I maintain that thoughtful, prudent and discerning Catholics can read these books and see them for what they are. They are essentially tales of love and self-sacrifice.

I wrote more here, when Nancy Brown's book on HP came out.

Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks for your kind response! I kept thinking how poorly I "worded" my comment last night!
Anywho, I should have known you would have much thought into the topic. I just really admire Christine Watkins and what she has to say.
I have not had to explore the HP issue as my children are still pretty young - right now it is all about Star Wars. I guess if/when they show interest I will have to discern for myself.
Thanks so much and looking forward your book and giving a copy to my mom!

Enjoy, Amy! I'm not sure how old your kids are, but do be forewarned about the level of violence and also the Harry/Hermione kiss that Ron imagines (his worst fear.) Let me know if you want details.

Katie, I didn't think you worded anything poorly -- it sounded like concerned fraternal sharing to me, so no worries! :) I have no problem with parents disagreeing on what they will/won't allow for their kids.

Have a great day!
