Bits and Pieces of Our Days

Things we've recently watched:

Star Wars
, with the kids. I call it "the first one." Some people call it "the fourth one," but I refuse to. A very young Harrison Ford makes it the first one.

Wuthering Heights (Confession ... I never read the book.) To fans of the book -- what do you think of this production?

Will Work for Food

Things we've recently read:

Lots of Eric Carle. He's Ramona's recent pick.

Mr. Popper's Penguins
-- parts of it have Ramona helpless with laughter. When the service man (who refused to put a handle on the inside of the refrigerator) backed out of the house saying, "Sure, sure .... " to Mr. Popper's wacky ideas, I thought she'd double over. Now I love to hear her imitation: "Suuuure, suuuuure ... that's a fiiiiine idea," she'll say, backing away from me.

This issue of Kids Discover. Love this magazine.

This piece from the Omaha World Herald about Charles Schulz, and this factoid:
When Schroeder pounded on his piano, his eyes clenched in a trance, the notes floating above his head were no random ink spots dropped into the key of G.
Schulz carefully chose each snatch of music ....

Read WH a couple of years ago (again because I didn't really read it the first time) - loved the book, haven't seen the movie. And we breathe Star Wars since my brother introduced it to my children. I was chatting with the son last night and asked him if he was thinking about how much he loved me and he replied, "No, I'm thinking about Storm Troopers." Sigh.
Anyway! The order drives me nuts - Lucy keeps calling "Star Wars" "A New Hope" and I have no idea what she's talking about.

PBS's WH is way racy. ;) I read a reviewer describe it as PBS turned WH into a Gothic Romanic instead of a tragic one.

It is racy -- Before it started, I had said to Atticus, "Maybe we should tape this, in case we want to show it to the girls at some point," and at one point during the program, he turned to me and said, "Do you still think we should have taped it?"

Uh ... no. :-)

And he laughed at the idea (mentioned after the closing credits) of a Teacher's Guide ... as if he could show it to his high school students!

Uh ... no.

I so sympathize with Ramona. When I read Mr. Popper to my kids I had a very difficult time reading some parts because I was laughing so hard.

Thanks for the Schroeder tip - I can't wait to show it to Jonathan. And yes, of course, Star Wars is the first one. :-)

Oh I sympathize. I was hoping to add to my collection of awesome movies of classics... but no. This won't be one of them - just because of their interpretation.

Karen, I really enjoyed the Schulz piece. I wish I could go see the exhibit. Perhaps someday someone will put something online, it would be a great candidate for youtube.

Re: Charles Schulz - Did anyone ever notice that he named the Van Pelt siblings Linus and Lucy - two fairly obscure names (esp. Linus) that both happen to appear in the Roman Canon?

I wonder if Schulz was Catholic.
