Ramona Reveals Her Secrets

(Recently whispered):

"Mommy?"

"Yes?"

"I have a secret to tell you."

"What is it?"

"I wish Daddy would make more fudge."

"Ah, yes. Well, I have a secret for you."

"What is it?"

"There's more of Daddy's fudge in the freezer."

(Eyes: wide. Smile: luminous. She has my genes.)

"Mommy?"

"Yes?"

"I have another secret."

"What is it?"

(With nose wrinkled, head shaking, and apologetic tone): "I've never liked pumpkin pie."

"That's okay. I won't ever make you eat it."

(Expression: relieved.)

"Ummm, Mommy?"

"Do you have another secret?"

"Yes."

"What is it?"

"I want a hedgehog."

(Mother: speechless.)

"Mommy?"

"Yes?"

"I have one more secret to tell you."

"What is it?"

"I love you."

"I love you, too, Ramona."

"Mommy?"

"Yes?"

"Can we have that fudge now?"

Tell Ramona that I want a hedgehog too.

(Having lots of fudge would be a bonus.)

Tell Ramona that the fudge is awaiting Mardi Gras, or Valentine's Day... After all there's feasting, there's fasting and there's ordinary time and it would seem like perhaps Atticus's fudge belongs to the feasting days so that Mommy's thighs and Ramona's teeth can take a break. But what do I know - being not very smart at all anymore.

We got your Christmas letter and the lovely picture of the girls. Anne looks SO grownup.

I have a hedgehog; they're very fun and easy to take care of. Mine lives in a large tupperware bin and eats dog food, so there's no fancy accessories to buy for him.
