At our house, I often preview books my kids want to read (if I know nothing about the book.) Holes has been around forever, and I should know more about it, but I don't. (And I'm offering no excuses. I just don't.)
Betsy has been wanting to read it, and she recently got impatient with me. I found this on my bed the other night:
Betsy's little sister is not one to outdone, and wanted a preview of her own. So, next I found this, courtesy of Ramona:
Hmmm ... I think I'll give the Seuss an automatic thumbs up, and I'm looking forward to Holes.
On another subject entirely, for my birthday, recently celebrated, I found this (also from Ramona):
And, here's a shot of Ramona hard at work creating a masterpiece:

We missed your birthday, Karen?? Happy birthday to you! The movie "Holes" was very funny.
Yep--"Holes" was a huge hit around here as well. (Especially the main character: "Kissing Kate Barlow".) The soundtrack, too, is really fun.
Joining Karen to say "Birthday?!!" When??? And you a responsible blogger....
Yes really! I would have thrown a cyber party for you with awesome cake. Well, happy LATE birthday anyway.
Happy Late Birthday, Karen!
Too cute! Happy belated birthday.
Funny? As I recall, the book 'Holes' was rather, dark? Um, kids being held prisoner, being beaten up, bullies, sadistic guards, that sort of thing. Unless I'm misremembering ...
Anyway, happy belated birthday Karen!
You guys are funny. I didn't think to mention my birthday here. But, it's never too late for cake, Jennifer. :-)
Hmmm ... definitely mixed reviews on Holes here ....
Sweet photos, Karen.
A happy birthday from me as well. I love the cute notes from your girls. And I love that cute haircut Ramona has. Aslynn's hair is SO long that I told her we should get her a summer cut and donate to Locks for Love. I just can't bring myself to set up that appointment, though! :)
Had I had my coffee when I left that comment above? "Joining Suzanne" is how it should have read.
Oh, and I was referring to the movie in my recommendation. We haven't read the book.
Is that a smiley face on her pencil eraser? Love it! :)
Hope you had a great b-day, Karen.
We watched Holes the movie last weekend and have had the book on our shelf for years. I've never read it. Oldest dd read it and liked it.
Happy belated birthday! Our blogs, they cross paths....
Interested to see what you think of Holes. I really liked it, but yes, it's dark. Since my oldest is only in 1st grade, I wanted to see what age you thought would be appropriate (I almost said "grade", ha!)
On reading your kid's books first, time consuming, yes, but for the best, right?
Yes, Tim, it is time-consuming, but for the best, yes ... I skipped some previewing recently, and regretted it ....
