Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord

And may perpetual light shine upon her.
May the souls of the faithfully departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

Amen.

With thanks to Ana Braga-Henebry for letting us know of the passing of writer and artist, Hilda van Stockum, on All Saints Day.

See details here, at Mrs. van Stockum's website.

We have just recently become big van Stockum fans (after reading The Borrowed House and currently, The Winged Watchman) and just a few weeks ago, I visited her website. We were happy to see that she was still alive, and tried to send a note, but all the links at that time were faulty. The most recent update to the site seemed to have been when she was about 93. I had hoped to track down an address for some snail mail.

The links are now working, and both email and snail mail may be sent to her family.

[Updated: Visit the Guest Book on Mrs. Van Stockum's site to leave a message for her family. Also, see this post about Mrs. Van Stockum's book, The Borrowed House, and the beautiful conversation it inspired.]

I'm sorry for your girls. I remember sobbing the day EB White died. I kept the obituary in my copy of Charlotte's Web for years.

Jennifer,
Thank you so much. That's so kind of you. Actually, they've handled the news very well -- Betsy said, "Wow -- All Saints Day. What a great day to die."

Oh, I wish I'd known she was still alive. Her Cottage at Bantry Bay series was among my favorite books read to us by my fourth grade teacher (I didn't know at the time that my teacher was a third order Carmelite). I tried the whole time my kids were growing up to find the series, but didn't know the name of the author. I finally found them when I discovered Ignatius Press. I've never read any of her other books, but those Irish stories made such an impression on me. I had assumed that she was long dead. However, what a wondeful day for such a wonderful Catholic author to go to her eternal reward.

Thanks for sharing this news.

Karen E. - Thanks for helping to keep my Mom's work alive. I am so grateful to Bethlehem Books for reprinting her books when they were less fashionable. I hope your readers will go to my Mom's web site now and write something in her "Guest Book". Already the signers stretch halfway around the world. John ("Timmy" in The Mitchells)

John,
Thank you so much for stopping by. We have been blessed by your mother's work, and hope to spread the word far and wide that her books are wonderful! We now want to read everything she's ever written.
