Life of Leisure

Willa, of EveryWakingHour, directs us to this excellent post at The SweetBriar Patch. It's about the definition and importance of "leisure" and how that relates to education. It's worth a separate post to talk about just how vital I think this is (a post I don't have time for right now.)

And, The Sweetbriar Patch has actually managed to find a C.S. Lewis quote that I've never seen ... I didn't think that was possible. It's this, and it will make you smile:

There was nothing which medieval people liked better, or did better, than sorting out and tidying up. Of all our modern inventions I suspect that they would most have admired the index card.

~C.S. Lewis, in The Discarded Image

I've never seen this one either, and as a medievalist I've never thought in those terms ... but he could well be right! I'm sure the clerks of the English Exchequer (think royal accountants) would have adored Excel spreadsheets. And everything would have been backed up and never, ever deleted ;).
