Even though I don't believe in the doctrine of purgatory (I don't think it can be defended biblically), I find the concept interesting. Gregory of Nyssa in the fourth century described the "bath" of purgatory using the metaphor of a mud-stained rope. Our sins adhere to our sould like wet mud soaks the threads of a rope. Gregory wrote that purgatory is like yanking the mud-caked rope through a small knot hole.
