O Flesh, Flesh, How Art Thou Fishified!

That's one of the lines my girls loved in Romeo and Juliet. I suspect they will also be calling people pestilent knaves. Yesterday I heard, "How now?" from Anne, and of course, "wherefore" in lieu of "why" has become commonplace.

We just finished reading the play together this morning, and together is a wonderful way to experience Shakespeare.

We've had such fun, getting up early, before Ramona is stirring, reading and sipping tea and, one day, watching Alan Rickman as Tybalt:

(Thanks to Atticus for remembering it.)

  2. Oh! How I LOVE this, and I love to watch it! It's hard to watch, though. I can't wait until my boys are old enough to watch it with me!

  3. We're on a R&J kick here, too! I nearly spit out my tea when I called my daughters to the table the other morning; they appeared (wearing their most sarcastic smiles), curtsied, and said 'Madam I am here. What is your will?"

Rickman's great, no doubt, but we're totally in the Zefferelli camp on film versions.

  4. Amy, I have plans to settle in and watch the Zefferelli film with my older girls. Can't wait!

  5. Warning re: the Zefferelli film. The one brief nude scene will be a big source of discussion whether you watch it or not. We fast-forwarded, but just the idea that an actor would appear naked was an endless source of bewilderment. Well, at least I have my 6yo on record that she'll never do a nude scene when she's a film star. :)

    Enjoy it! It's stunning.

  6. Thanks, Amy. Yes, I've seen the movie, and it's really lovely. It was a long time ago -- they rereleased it in theaters when I was a teenager. The girls and I have already talked about that scene, but I'm glad you mentioned it here, as I forgot to include such a warning to other moms. Thank you!
