I'm thinking that a short break from WWII might be nice for the read-alouder here .... :-)Karen Edmisten https://www.blogger.com/profile/04446214835142625161noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17019672.post-1159832373332768242006-10-02T18:39:00.000-05:002006-10-02T18:39:00.000-05:00Well put, Karen.I've been thinking about this conv...Well put, Karen.

I've been thinking about this conversation a lot lately. Neither my wife or I watch the news, but let's face it, you can't hide your kids forever from the outside world.

My 6 year-old son, Ryan, asked what a torpedo was (after explaining why the sea lion at the zoo was called by that name) and we ended up talking about war. "A torpedo does what?" "It's shot from a ship to sink another ship." "Why?" I'm not even sure other people have these discussions. Maybe they just say, "We shoot torpedoes at evil people so they will do evil no more." But I felt it was such a terrible answer, I couldn't bring myself to do it. The interesting thing, as in the conversation with your daughters, is how deep a moral level it brought us. (And why moms generally don't like to talk about war.)

Though I enjoyed having the conversation, I'm not sure I'd have the energy to have it every day.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15612036812212996656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17019672.post-1159763129614263612006-10-01T23:25:00.000-05:002006-10-01T23:25:00.000-05:00What an incredible conversation.
