Poetry Friday: The Good Nights

Atticus sent this one to me yesterday. Not only is the poem about wine (the poet and his wife are, after all, the authors of A Guide to North Carolina's Wineries), it's about late nights and marriage. It is winsome, funny, and true.

If it were a wine, I would open another bottle.

The Good Nights

when the bottle's empty
we always want
just a little more,
half a glass,
a few sips,

Oh that is beautiful! It reminds me so much of those night when Dom and I were not dating when I would stand literally for hours with my hand on the knob of his front door, knowing I needed to go home and to prepare for the next day's classes; but unable to leave his company. These days lingering over a bottle of wine or two is just not in the cards. Right now I'm pregnant and so limited to a single glass. And yet I know all too well that same unquenchable desire.

Yes, it's lovely, isn't it? So beautifully captured.

This is such a lovely poem. The last line is so endearing and unexpected. Your blog has really been inspiring me to read more poetry and keeps me grounded through the craziness of the day. Many thanks!

nms, yes, doesn't the last line complete it perfectly? And I'm so happy to hear about someone enjoying more poetry. You made my day -- thanks!
