Poetry Friday

Some days it seems as if Atticus and I are in a race to The Writer's Almanac. He beat me to this one the other day, suggesting it for Poetry Friday. I am in complete agreement.

Revival
by Luci Shaw

March. I am beginning
to anticipate a thaw. Early mornings
the earth, old unbeliever, is still crusted with frost
where the moles have nosed up their
cold castings, and the ground cover
in shadow under the cedars hasn't softened
for months, fogs layering their slow, complicated ice
...

Poetry will be gathered in today at Gathering Books.

Luci Shaw is one of my favorites - her poem Wrong Turn is succinct and yet makes me think. I have a book of her poems in which she writes about angels - "sexless" and "muscular" are two of the words she uses, and this year when I came across angel fiction in the Cybils nominations, I thought of this:

Against the indigo sky,
where judgment pulses
like an aneurysm, sunlight spins
its horizontal threads across the field until
the yellows in the standing wheat stalks
match the low light. Harvester angels
cast huge wings of shadow,
scything a crop, lifting it
from the skin of an acre
like fleece from a sheep's flank.

It is only later that they delicately
unhook teasel, thistle, burdock
from the heavy gold grain.

...and I thought, "Nope. Nothing so good as Luci's angels."

(Which, incidentally, come from the poem, "The Labor of Angels" from Accompanied by Angels: Poems of the Incarnation, Eerdmans, 2006.

I love Luci Shaw. She's been on my favorite poets for years, and seeing her on the Writer's Almanac this week made me very happy! Such a lovely poem too. Glad you reposted it here.

*one of my favorite poets

Sorry, my inner editor wouldn't allow me to leave it alone. :)

Our winter has been too warm for a March like this. And I'm missing this feeling of having earned the change of seasons in some bitterly cold way...
