Stretching Myself As a Mom

You know how in my last post I talked about following the Church because I love and follow Jesus? Well, in a similar vein, I embrace certain Mom-ish behaviors, such as trying to decorate birthday cakes, purely because I love my children so dearly, not because I dream at night of finding the perfect cake decorating tip.

Ramona wanted a Webkinz cake. The Rainbow Armadillo Webkinz. On her cake. Uh-huh. That's right.

So, I tried:

If you're a legitimate cake-decorating-type, please excuse me. Don't examine the saggy borders and the crooked smile and the less-than-perfect consistency of the other accents.

You see, I thought "Mommy, I want chocolate cake with chocolate icing" meant, "Mommy, I want chocolate cake with chocolate icing" not, "Mommy, I'm going to ask at the last minute that you also furnish yellow, pink, purple and a dab of red icing for the mouth." But she was so earnest that I couldn't say no. Would you?

Happy birthday, Ramona!

I think it looks great and very much like the Rainbow Armadillo's likeness! That's how I got into decorating my kid's cakes, just trying to make them smile. They seem to recognize all the love our efforts are filled with. Happy Birthday, Ramona!

They do indeed recognize the love, Charlotte! I was muttering something as I decorated, and my older girls said, "She'll love it, Mom," and yeah, she does. :)

Wish you could come over for a piece, Lissa!

You did good! Looks just like a rainbow armadillo to me. Anyway, it is so much better than the last cake attempt around here, which looked more like a pancake than a birthday cake!

Oh, it's sweet!!! In the world of "it's the thought that counts" being discounted as doublespeak for "do a half-hearted job," I can truly say that a.) this looks great and b.) it truly IS the thought and time and heart that you put into this that counts. I'll bet R. thinks it is awesome.

Two things:
1) The cake looks great to me, and 2) my jaw is on the floor at the concept that Ramona is 9. Happy birthday, Ramona!
