Poetry Friday: Another Reason Why I Don't Keep a Gun in the House

Aaaaahhhh, Billy Collins.
It's been awhile, and I just needed a fix.
Happy Poetry Friday!

Another Reason Why I Don't Keep a Gun in the House
by Billy Collins

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
He is barking the same high, rhythmic bark
that he barks every time they leave the house.
They must switch him on on their way out.

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
I close all the windows in the house
and put on a Beethoven symphony full blast
but I can still hear him muffled under the music,
barking, barking, barking,

and now I can see him sitting in the orchestra,
his head raised confidently as if Beethoven

(Read the rest of the poem here.)

The round up today is at A Teaching Life.

Oh "the famous barking dog solo"!!! I do adore Billy Collins. Thanks for the morning smile, Karen.

HAHAHAHAH!
Oh, there's a REALLY GOOD REASON for not having a gun, right there.

One ought not have things around the house that one does not want to use... I love how the title doesn't at all intersect with the poem except in the wry Billy Collins way that they always do...

Thanks for sharing this. All week I've been enjoying another Billy Collins poem, "A Dog On His Master" in the book Poetry Speaks Who I Am.

That's great. So full of dry, wry humor ... and how coincidental that I also picked a funny dog-related poem for Poetry Friday!

You've piqued my interest in more Billy Collins.

Not just "A" reason, but "Another." Brilliant. Thanks for posting this gem. You can never go wrong with Billy Collins on Poetry Friday, can you?

Ha! I love this one. And it really resonates since our dog does the barking beagle solo regularly. Hmmm...I hope none of our neighbors have guns, either!

Thanks for sharing this one. Always gives me a good laugh!
