Ramona Hints

We were looking at the grocery store ads together yesterday, and as I scribbled a few things on my list, Ramona said (rather wistfully I might add), "I've never had a Swiss Roll."

"Oh?" I said. "Well, they're a lot like Ho-hos."

She sighed. "I've never had a Ho-ho, either."

I stopped scribbling. "You haven't? Well, y'know," I said in my I'm-about-to-teach-you-something voice, "Swiss Rolls and Ho-hos are not nearly as good as homemade chocolate chip cookies. Wouldn't you rather have homemade cookies?"

"I guess," she said.

I went back to my list.

"Still ...." she trailed off, gazing lovingly at the ad.

Nary a Swiss Roll or a Ho-ho in seven years? What kind of a mother am I?

The kind, I think, that will be buying something in a box today.

It was a couple of years ago, when my kids were 10 and 7 that they had Twinkies for the first time. I'm not sure they've had them since, either.

I'm going to have to insist on Ding-Dongs. Ding-Dongs are way better than Swiss Rolls. Especially frozen Ding-Dongs in the summer. Get on that Mrs. Edmisten. I think I talked myself into some.

We love Swiss Rolls.
Though, they are more of an Easter
season food. Every Holy Saturday, Dad takes us to the grocery store, and we get(almost!) free reign!

My daughters really enjoyed this post, except now they TOO are asking me for some snacks in a box.

Um, Karen?

I must say that there there are times when all this healthy eating just isn't much fun. No Ho Ho's? My kids wouldn't know either. We were visiting my cousins one day when their mom suggested that we go out to lunch. They live in a very rural area where the choices are few and going out anywhere is considered a treat. Her boys excitedly began shouting, "McDonalds! McDonalds! Can we go to McDonalds?!"
My girls were equally excited to go. However; before I could intercept the obvious that was coming, it was out in the open by both my six and three-year-old, "What's McDonalds"?
How positively unamerican.
Please, go get the Ho-Ho's.

Enjoy the party! Life is to be celebrated. She will remember this as a loving gesture -- a mom who actually let her indulge in Swiss Rolls! (We eat them around here on occasion...always a hit.)

It is very nearly a national disaster when we run out of ho-hos in our house. I guess Ramona should come and visit.

And I'll be looking for the follow-up post to this, Karen. :) How'd she like those ho-hos? :)

I bought Twinkies as a treat for my children, thinking I was all of a sudden this awesome mother. The kids, age 7, 5, and 2 didn't like them at all.

My mom always made her own spaghetti sauce and it was always very good. But we got it into our heads that we were some sort of deprived, because she didn't buy Ragu. One time she did. We never asked for it again.

But I hope you got your daughter those Swiss Rolls. I'm partial to Devil Dogs, myself. Or Little Debbie Marshmallow Creme Pies, for a serious sugar rush.

I remember as a kid it was always a treat to have store-bought cookies at home, because we always had homemade. But at Grandma's house it was always a treat because we got to have homemade bread! It's all in your perspective.

Well you can bet there will be some here at Thanksgiving! And some of everything else that girl wants! Anything for brownie points!
