Getting to the bottom of things

Yesterday, at 10:15 a.m., Ramona asked for lunch.

"It's too early," I chided. "We'll wait a little bit for lunch."

"But, Mommy," she said, "I really, really want lunch now."

"Well," I replied in that pragmatic, Mommy-Way, "how about a clementine?"

"No, I need lunch. Can I have lunch?"

"Why do you want lunch right now?"

"Because," she said, "I'm really eager to have cake for dessert."

I'm with you, Ramona. How could a clementine possibly suffice when you can practically taste that cake?
